Harvesting Tea

Categories: [Asia]  [People]  [Sri Lanka]
Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is famous for its tea production. Here, on a plantation once ruled by Sir Thomas Lipton, the leaves are picked by hand.
Tea was introduced in the British colony of Ceylon in the first half of the 19th century, and now the country is one of the world's major producer, with more than 250 thousands tons of tea exported during the year 2000. A very rare example of a successful industry brought to a country by colonists.
